Glencore Coal empowers local businesses with Mhluzi Industrial Hub

31 March 2023 – Location, lack of space, and facilities are often defining factors in the success of a business, the absence of which can often delay business growth. To provide alternative facilities for light industrial local SMMEs who are currently housed in residential areas, Glencore Coal constructed an industrial hub at Mhluzi, in Steve Tshwete Local Municipality (STLM).
The project is part of Glencore’s Social and Labour Plan commitment to identify projects that can potentially meet the socio-economic needs of communities as stipulated in their Zonnebloem Mining Right. Through such projects, the mining company seeks to award local SMMEs with the opportunity to make a significant contribution to local economies to alleviate some of the socio-economic challenges faced by communities.
General Manager for Community and Regulatory Affairs at Glencore Coal, Noel Pillay, addressed STLM executives, members of the community, and Glencore representatives to express the importance of the day to the community of Mhluzi.
"Today is about demonstrating our commitment to delivering on our Social and Labour Plan responsibilities, but more importantly, it's about our commitment to progressing together with our most valued stakeholders - our communities. We are extremely proud to be able to assist local SMMEs by providing them with access to business space to structure their activities. The overall intention is to validate the informal sector to ensure that there is diversification towards the community, local and regional economies. We are committed to improving the livelihood of our community members, and we will continue to contribute to initiatives that make it possible for greater progress to come to fruition, not just in the short term but in the future as well," he said.
Industrial hubs have been widely associated with structural transformation, and while there are direct economic benefits, their true value lies in their contribution as incubators for industrialisation and innovation.
The following facilities can be housed in the light industrial facility:
Printing
Vehicle repairs
Management services
Computer services

  • Carpentry

  • Metal work

  • Embroidery

"As the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, it brings us such joy to witness the outcome of our fruitful relationship with Glencore which has culminated in this industrial hub that will help to create job opportunities in our community. We will fast track processes to speedily approve businesses that have been shortlisted to utilise this facility, the sooner we start operating, the sooner the community is impacted. Thank you to all the stakeholders who have been involved, as well as our local businesses for your openness to do business in this community, to create greater impact not just for yourselves, but those around you." said Executive Mayor of Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, Cllr Mhlonishwa Masilela.

The hub provides partitioned working spaces and a larger workshop area with an overhead crane, a storage room, four offices, and a communal kitchen.

Through the build, Glencore contracted with Rospa Trading 28, a community contractor who was also able to provide employment opportunities to five contractors and 30 community members, 18 of whom were youth during the project construction phase.

"I’m thankful to have been afforded the opportunity to be involved in the development of my community. We hope that through this project, the community will be empowered to take charge of their future as well as take care of the facility for future employment opportunities," said Khunollo Makuse, Managing Director of Rospa Trading 28.

Glencore remains committed to its mission of creating a sustainable and long-lasting impact in its communities. Through successful partnerships with local government and community stakeholders, the mining company continues to deliver its promise of progressing together for today and the future.

GO FOR WHAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT

“Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful. They are sunshine, food, and medicine to the mind" Jabulile  Digashu

Jabulile Digashu is one of the inspiring and business minded women.  She was born and bred in Middelburg and completed her matric at Eastdene Combined School. Jabulile is a business owner and has a Degree in Accounting and Entrepreneurship.

The idea of a business came after she graduated and discovered that she had a passion for business. With her love for flowers, she then decided to start her own flower business called “ Deevine Florist"  in 2019. “I’ve always been a lover of flowers, sunflowers to specific. Flowers evoke the feeling of feeling special and happiness and I am one person who loves to be happy and see people around me happy I’m living up to my name” she said.

Jabulile found the flower business a very difficult industry to venture into because it is known to be a white dominated industry. The first few months were difficult for her. With the help and mentor from Lee Holtzhausen, she managed to get a few tips to start her own flower business.

When she introduced her business to the people, they were so excited and that to her meant a lot as she got the feedback she was hoping for and that positively changed everything.  “We’re not an ordinary flower business, we bring exclusivity to our clients.” She said

Challenges became part of the growth in the business industry. As a small business working hard and putting in more work every single day has been one of the reasons why the business is where it is today. “By the grace of God over the years we’ve managed to provide job opportunities enabling the business to run solely,”she said. With  the love and support from close friends and family Jabulile was able to pull through all the challenges she faced.

They currently work with well known funeral parlors in Middelburg and Witbank. And doing a lot of giving back projects throughout Middelburg and Witbank with Dee Foundation their partner in their CSI projects.  Devine Florist will be turning 4 years in March and more exciting stuff will be happening.

“I always advise people to start without the funding, regardless of who believes in you or not. When the seed has been planted in you all you need to do is water it and you’ll see it blossom” _Jabulile  Digashu

WORDS IN HIS MOUTH, WEALTH ON HIS PATH!

IMG-20230106-WA0011_edited.jpg

Menzi Mkhonza brings hope to lovers of poetry as he runs an academy that teaches poetry and shares all his skills with young and old poetry lovers. Menzi is the author of one of the best-selling poetry books titled "Less than a stanza".
In his existence, poetry got a breathing chance.
Born in Nhlazatshe and raised by his grandmother in Game (Phola), later moved in with his parents in Kamagugu (Nelspruit) Menzi Mkhonza describes his upbringing as dynamic.

Menzi had a dream of being the greatest performer in high school. He did everything that screamed art, From acting to dancing. To loving and sharing, caring to perform. Just being on stage for him was life. He then knocked on poetry's door which opened his eyes to the amazing skill he has of turning words into life.

"I used to write poems to utter my emotions and try to flirt with girls, "said Menzi.

IMG-20230106-WA0008.jpg
IMG-20230106-WA0004.jpg

"Poetry is a very difficult industry to tap into, "he said. With challenges he came across, Menzi names the struggle of finding the right venue that people are open to and works for both performers and audiences. As we all know that in our entertainment category, poetry is the least mentioned. His dream is to create infrastructure and jobs through poetry, an industry for poetry where poets are also recognised like musicians.

Menzi started as a stage performer, later elevated to hosting sessions, more than just words at Casambo guest Lodge, nurturing talents, hosting and collaborating with Badilisha poetry exchange, innibos Festival. Blue gate's "WORDS IN MY MOUTH" is a dream dreamt by him and enjoyed by the majority.

Menzi encourages people to take things that they like about him and use them in their own lives rather than wanting to be like him.

To the youth out there looking up to him, he "said Don't be like me, be unique, be yourself and create yourself.

She suffered from depression and anxiety a lot. With the support system from her mother and friends, she was able to overcome some challenges

FROM BEING AN EMPLOYEE TO A BUSINESS OWNER

Art is more than drawing and painting. It's about creativity, consciously expressing ideas through imagination, Communicating our emotions, thoughts and desires.
Thobile Ntuli customizes art on sneakers/clothes to create a unique look making a quick yet lasting statement, leading her work to become a trademark in the township. Thobile Ntuli, a mother of two boys, is a self-taught artist who was born and bred in a small town in KZN called Mtubatuba. She completed her BA in arts and culture( drama specialization) at the University of Zulu Land(Ongonye)

She was inspired by an article she read by Esther Mahlangu to start her own business. She quit her job as she decided it was time to do what her heart wanted, to do something she's passionate about. That's how Luthuli Creatives was born.

She had to take a risk and put her talent to the test and accommodate every client that wanted a specific design. As time went by, she eventually became versatile. Her first design was a pair of sneakers, "It was a huge accomplishment to me since I didn't know how I can crack such beauty through painting and drawing" she said.

Not only was it her accomplishment, but she was also recognized by big companies. OPPORTUNITIES DON'T HAPPEN, YOU CREATE THEM

“If you think you can't, you won't.  But if you think you can, you will" Simphiwe Masombuka

A 27 year old Simphiwe Masombuka, a founder of  Mtoni Pharmacy was born and raised in Middelburg.  She completed her matric in 2013 at Mphanama Comprehensive School.

Simphiwe grew up always being very fond of the health department.  And always thought of going to end up as a doctor or a nurse at some hospital. “The thought of a CEO of some company didn't sound bad either, as I've always possessed leadership skills,” she said.  However, the pharmaceutical industry found her and she instantly fell so deeply in love with it.

She then started working at private pharmacies and one of the best parts of her working day was having a client who would come back to thank her for the medication she gave which was very fulfilling to her.  “The deeper I fell the more I knew I wanted to do more, I wanted to be more than an employee whose priority is to make sales,” she said.

NEWS

Simphiwe's dream of owning a pharmacy seemed so far-fetched and she thought about all the work she had to put in to turn her dreams into reality.  Everything became better when she shared her goals and visions with her partner who gave her support and solutions to her problems.  He held his hand throughout the whole process for almost 2 years of prayer, tears, and sweat. “ I honestly would not have done it if I was alone," she said.

b94aaa32-eb4a-4b53-ba11-6505b2d0e115.jfif
65f7e718-b6a9-4b87-a856-32c7b38d4bd9.jfif

During the revamping and renovation of the pharmacy she encountered a lot of financial challenges, which led to using money from her loved one's pockets because of unexpected costs. Even today she's still facing some challenges but the most important one is marketing.

One of the plans she has for the next coming year is growth and job creation for young people around town and most importantly being able to manage the pharmacy without being present every day. And also seeing the current pharmacy giving birth to another one in the next coming years, however for now the most important thing for her is to be able to collaborate with other black business owners in assisting under privilege community members and doing more charity work.

“To young people out there who want to start their own businesses remember what you put your mind to you can achieve it. Trust in yourself, trust in God, have patience and always stay dedicated, yes you will always come across challenges and struggles and it's going to drain you physically, mentally and financially but remember your "WHY". Don't skip steps because easy come easy go. I believe if God has given you the business idea, he has given you the clients and it's also important to surround yourself with the right circle, people who inspire you to do better, be better and want better for your self. Lastly remember if you don't go for what you want, you will never get it.”

“Work hard every day. No matter what your strengths and weaknesses, there's no substitute for hard work" Thabiso Mokwana
Geraldine Thabiso Lindiwe Mokwana is one of the inspiring and committed women. She was born and raised in Middelburg. She grew up in a spiritual home in a God oriented family.

318964354_704608471063063_3003278660634645860_n.jpg

Thabiso started singing at a very young age. As she grew up God kept on placing her in areas where she would be commended for singing well. “ That became motivation to me," she said. Her music career started in December 2019 when the local municipality had auditions for a year end function. “ I got to share the stage with great artists and it all got better from there. All thanks to The Lord God Almighty, I'm now privileged to be in the Rising Sun Choir and The Genesis Choir” she said.
She then entered the Writers Worship Auditions where they wanted an upcoming artist who can be featured on a song along with the great Takie Ndou or Putuma Tiso. “To me this was a great opportunity to grow and also the thought of singing with the oh so great Putuma inspired me to enter,” she said. She got through all the way to the top 8 through dedication, votes, support from her loved ones she was able to be in the position she was in. Unfortunately she didn't win but absolutely content with where she is.

320568520_844811233405069_3407723614321883918_n.jpg

One of the challenges she faced is overcoming fear and thinking positively about the gift God placed in her. “I've compared myself quite a lot to other vocalists and expected myself to do just as they do, but through God, I'm still conquering that,” she said.
“You don't need great qualifications for God to put you in great places. Trust in Him, He'll make your life easier. Work on your craft and watch God work “ she said.

LIMITS EXITS IN THE MIND

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader" Mlungisi Sindane

Mllungisi Carthius Sindane is one of the career driven and inspiring man. He was born and bred in Middelburg.  He attended elementary schooling at Manyano Primary School and then matriculated in 2009 at Sofunda Secondary School. He is a Local Economic Development Coordinator at Steve Tshwete Local Municipality.  He also does community development work, motivational speaking, and business development coaching and is a messenger of Christ.

He then furthered his studies at the London School of business and management to obtain his BTEC Higher National Diploma in Business in 2012 and continued at Heriot Watt University where he obtained a Bachelors degree in Business Administration in 2013. Recently he graduated from UNISA with his postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (NQF8)

He started public speaking in his high school years. He then developed a love for public speaking that later on turned into motivational speaking. “What drove me drove me to motivational speaking is my passion to see people living a life that is the best version of who they should be and encouraging them to never settle for just getting by but rather to keep on keeping until they reach their destiny, “he said.

Besides him being the good husband that he is and a good father to his son, he loves touching people's lives and empowering people because it is what he believes he's called for. The challenges he dealt with were insecurities he had about himself “ I needed to accept myself as I was".  Mlungisi had to work twice as hard to have what he has now judging from being raised by a single mother and that made him keep his head up high and push even more.

One of the things he achieved was winning a community builder award on behalf of the organisation he was leading in recognition of the great work he and his team did in youth development at Colour My World, it all happened in 2013. Recently Mlungisi had his wife launch a legacy project called “Navigate: let's do life" which is a project aimed at empowering people to be at their best with focus on empowerment, relationships and spirituality.

“My advice to young people is for them to take charge of their lives and make use of their time wisely grabbing opportunities that are available or creating those opportunities.  To never seek to be comfortable when chasing their dreams.  Always keep in mind that in the end it won't matter what you had or lacked but rather what you did with the life God gave you. So they need to make the most of every moment”  Mlungisi.

He is  the Global Multi-Award Winning Author, Founder and CEO for Power House Film and Television Production, Self proclaimed GBV ambassador, GBV Activist and Site Manager for Operating and Industrial Cleaning Company.

Strike started writing in 1995 when he was in grade 10 while he was still in school at Zacheus Malaza in Witbank. “I used to write love letters and sell them between R5 and R20, my first customers were my best friends John Mduduzi Nkosi and Ephraim Nhlapho” he said.

AUTHOR

His first official and self publish book came out in 2018 titled “LIFE A SEA OF GLEES AND WOES" which was dedicated to varsity and it consist of eight phenomenal and hilarious short stories that will leave you hanging and wanting more. “From there the sky became the limit and my writing journey took a U- turn to greener pastures and I never looked back” he said.

He continued writing and a second book came out a fiction novel titled “ HOME SWEET HOME" dedicated to domestic violence against women and children. And again a third fiction book came out titled "VICTIM TO VICTOR"  also dedicated to domestic violence against women this time with a unique and different dynamics as he joined venture with a phenomenal female author from Middelburg Mhluzi, her name is Daluxolo Surprise Nhlapo. The books were both launch in Kriel/ Thubelihle.

Year 2021 he saw African Continent book competition on Facebook, unfortunately the submission were closed so he couldn't enter the competition. “I was encouraged and inspired by Godfrey Malibe and Thembi Ntahane Ka Mahlangu whom they both won and became the African Award-winning Authors representing South Africa/ Mpumalanga against the PEN WARRIORS IN AFRICA” he said. In 2022 he then made his submission in time and all of his three books were nominated which made him the Global Multi-Award Winning Author in July at the 5th Edition AfriCAN Honoree Authors Awards. He the Adult Empowerment category. And Strike was honoured amongst the legendary Dr Tu Nokwe.

One of the biggest challenges he came across was the selling of the books. And dealing with how the system works, books shops that don't deal with self published authors.

“Writing stories/books should be your passion, your calling something you are willing and ready to persuade and do over and over again even if there is no guarantee that you will be making money out of your book work. Your priorities as an author shouldn't be that you're writing and publishing books to make money however your primary objectives should be to write stories/ books to touch lives, inspire and motivate people, give hope to the hopeless, be the voices of the silent.” Strike Mnguni

OVERCOME YOUR FEAR

Exodus 14:13 – “Moses answered the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still."

When Moses said, “Don’t be afraid”, he equally meant to say, “Overcome your fear” for fear is a thief of faith and hope. When our troubles seem unyielding to our prayers, it is in our own interest to get above our fear by leaving it to God. Don’t think of saving yourself by fighting a natural battle! ‘Be still’, means, ‘be calm, confident and determined’. God does not need our effort or assistance to carry out His promises of deliverance.

God revealed to Moses what He would do in the circumstances and he believed. Moses was saying to the people, ‘Don’t waver in your faith; be steadfast and be still – have peace of heart, have confidence in the God you believe in. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again; the trouble you see today you will never see again’ (Exodus 14:13). Their enemies were frustrated and immediately they surrendered.

PRAYER POINTS:

Lord, let my enemy see Your finger in my life, get frustrated and surrender because You have set a table before me in the presence of my enemy.

What is your problem? Ask God to give you the grace to always cast your burdens upon Him as Moses did in his encounter with the Egyptian army at the Red Sea.

Lord, in my encounter with the evil forces, teach me the way I should go as You did the Israelites at the Red Sea.

Instruct me the way I should go as You did Moses in his encounter.

Save me from the wicked plans of my adversaries as You did Daniel in the lions’ den.

Deliver me from every generational curse as You did Jabez.

Lord, give me power to face all the challenges of the enemy, in the name of Jesus.

I loose myself from the bondage of fear, in Jesus’ name!
